Cement is an essential building material in both commercial and residential construction work. Thanks to the unique hydraulic binding properties of the cement, when mixed with water, sand and aggregates it forms concrete. It is an extremely versatile and durable building material that can sustain high load-bearing capacity and is resistant to environmental extremes. It is predominantly used in building bridges and is crucial to the construction of infrastructure.

 What Is Cement?

It is a fine grey powder. During construction, water is added to it together with other substances to make mortar or concrete. So, cement is not a final product but an ingredient of concrete. When mixed with water, it binds and holds the concrete mix together, making it strong.

Types of Cement

The type of cement you will require will depend on the construction project.

- Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC)

Is the most popular and widely used type of cement. It is not only used in the construction of buildings, but to manufacture grout, solid concrete and ACC blocks, and wall patty.

- Portland Pozzolana Cement (PPC)

This type of eco-friendly cement is manufactured by a combination of natural pozzolanic materials.  It is highly resistant to chemicals; therefore, it is widely used in sewage works, marine structures, construction of piers, dams, bridges, piers, and other mass concrete works.

- Rapid Hardening Cement

It has a high content of lime and finer grinding, it is widely used in rapid constructions and road works, thanks to its rapid hardening properties.

- Quick setting cement

As the name suggests this type if cement sets faster than rapid hardening cement and is predominantly used for concreting in static or running water.

- White Cement

It is made of raw materials that are iron and oxide-free. This type of cement in general is more expensive due to the higher promotion of lime and clay.

How to mix cement to make concrete mix

If you require to mix cement for a more complicated project rather than a small household job, then you will most likely need to get a concrete mixer.  The amount of product you need to use will depend on the size of the job. Materials will normally come with the manufacture instructions which will guide you on the recommended ratio to use for your mixture.

Below is a list of building materials you will require to make your concrete:

  • Water
  • Sand
  • Aggregates
  • Cement

There is a list of safety equipment that will be required to protect yourself from harmful debris and dust that will occur during the mixing process. You will need:

  • Heavy-duty safety gloves.
  • Eye protection such as goggles.
  • Mouth protection such as dusk mask or respirator.

For the standard concrete mix, you need to place cement, aggregates, sand, and water into the separated plastic bucket.  The ratio for your concrete will depend on what strength you are aiming to achieve. Standard concrete mix is normally mixed in the proportion of 1 part of cement to 2 parts of sand to 4 parts of aggregates.  In order to mix all the ingredients, you will require a shovel then just turn the pile about four times to get that optimal consistent colour. A good mixture should be smooth and consistent not too dry or crumbly.

Before any construction, consult your architect or contractor to advise you on what type of cement would be ideal for your construction.
