How to lay laminate flooring
- Preparation: First up, you'll want to make sure your subfloor is clean, dry, and level. Any bumps or dips can mess up your final result, so take care of those first.
- Acclimation: Don't skip this step! Lay your laminate planks in the room where they'll be installed for at least 48 hours. This helps them adjust to the temperature and humidity and reduces warping after installation.
- Underlay: Roll out the underlay to provide a smooth, cushioned surface. This helps with soundproofing and moisture protection. Make sure the seams of the underlay don’t overlap because that can cause issues when you lay the planks.
- Layout Planning: Plan how you'll lay the planks, ideally running parallel to the longest wall to make the room appear larger. Consider the plank width at the edges of the room; you don't want to end up with a super thin slice at the doorway.
- Installation: Start from a corner and work row by row. Most laminate planks click together, so snap them into place, being careful to stagger the seams for a more natural look and added durability. Use a tapping block to snugly fit them together without damaging the edges.
- Cutting Planks: You'll likely need to cut some planks to fit. Measure twice and cut once using a saw, ideally a circular saw or a hand saw. Always cut with the finished side up to minimize chipping.
- Finishing Touches: Once all the planks are down, install baseboards or trim to cover the expansion gaps along the walls. These gaps are important as they allow the floor to expand and contract without buckling.
